Having worked within Glasgow’s late-effects service, I saw what happened when people’s symptoms were finally taken seriously, investigated and treated through coordinated multidisciplinary care.

The new Bowel Cancer UK report confirms that Scotland currently has no dedicated bowel cancer late-effects clinic following the closure of its only specialist service in 2025 due to a lack of funding.

Where someone lives should not determine whether they can access help to eat, work, travel, socialise and live confidently after cancer treatment.

We need investment in research—but we also need properly funded pathways that translate knowledge into accessible care.

Diet can play an important role in managing the lo

Diet can play an important role in managing the long-term effects of bowel cancer treatment—but advice must be individualised.

Bowel Cancer UK’s report identifies a need for stronger cancer-specific dietary evidence. It also highlights conflicting guidance, limited personalised advice and poor translation of gastroenterology knowledge into cancer care.

People should not be left to manage complex symptoms through restrictive diets and trial and error.

Long-term symptoms should not be dismissed as someone’s unavoidable “new normal”. Many can be investigated, treated or better managed—but access to specialist support remains a postcode lottery.
